Rannerdale Blue Bells 6 th may

I have always wanted to see the famous fell side bluebells at Rannerdale in the lake district.  the last 3 years running i have missed them so was determined to see them this year :)
So after seeing weather forecast for a sunny day, i got up early ( quite hard for me! ) and drove the 170 mile journey up the m6 from Cheshire to Rannerdale,  it was sunny all the way up UNTIL i got to Keswick.  it was raining all the way Over whinlatter pass. when i got to Rannerdale it was Hail stoning!!!!!!!!!!!!  i just could not believe it!  sat in car for nearly 45 minutes while it rained and hailed! eventually it eased and i just had to go and see the bluebells.

looking back, the weather over Crummock water was not looking good!

The path from the car park is only about 5 minutes to get to the gate where the first view of the fell side is seen and the first bluebells with snow on the mountain tops!  in May!!!

So here i was shooting bluebells in pouring rain and sleet!!!! in May!
more like February if you ask me!    unreal!

Here you can see the large areas of blue on the fell side , usually they are only seen growing in woodland settings under trees!

Here is a Panorama shot showing the size of the area  large HERE

I followed the stream up to a small bridge and crossed over to shoot in the bluebells.

Amazing to see them up close on the sloping fell side.

The conditions were not great for shooting so i decided to leave for now and hopefully return later in the day when the sun would shine through! a climb up Rannerdale knott  1165 ft which gives superb views down Buttermere valley towards Fleetwith Pike sounded good , especially as the changeable weather would lead to atmospheric images.

That will be the next part of the days adventures:)     and the Bluebell story continues later also when in early evening SUN! i went back to shoot them again!
